Designer's Statement

"When you first look from the land of Dusable Park at the surroundings, all you can see are massive high-rise concrete and metal structures. So, we approached this viewpoint with the notion of creating a park that would fill the gap in the region and strive to strike a balance between built-up areas and green spaces. Therefore, the concept of the park primarily focuses on natural and social aspects, aiming to enhance the quality of the community and provide a place for people to engage with nature while enjoying the view of Lake Michigan.

After exploring various design approaches, our team settled on what we believe is the most vibrant and dynamic design. This design seamlessly incorporates different elements of the community. Our concept involves utilizing the varying elevations of the land for activities that require sloped areas, creating pathways at different levels to make the park intriguing for both children and adults. Additionally, we aimed to simulate the natural landscapes found outside the city, such as hills. This approach also establishes a playful visual connection with the surroundings and the lake.

To keep our focus on the design's goal, we established an engagement link to gather suggestions and ideas for further improvement. The feedback we received was incredibly insightful!

In our efforts to foster a stronger community, we designed a unique red-colored path along the waterfront. This encourages people to walk alongside the water and provides diverse seating areas at various levels. These seating spaces can be enclosed for social interactions or left open, allowing visitors to appreciate the mesmerizing scenery of the park and the lake. All spaces of the park were put into consideration to accommodate people with different conditions to enjoy their time regardless of their physical abilities. To take maximum advantage of the view and space we also added a lookout building, made of low-carbon emission concrete, offering a wider view of the lake, park, and trees from above. This space serves as well as a multipurpose hall for activities and small exhibitions, contributing to events that matter and enlighten the community. However, sustainability was met in using local materials like recycled wood, in canopies and seating areas."
