Brief

How do we design for impact? In a world bustling with innovation, we often overlook the potential within our own communities. This competition is a chance to harness your community’s spirit and design something with local value.

Your challenge is to transform and enhance a local public space that is overlooked or poorly maintained. This transformation should be beautiful and add value to the lives of those who encounter it. We encourage you to foster social wellbeing and enhance people’s lives through your design.

Some examples might be: turning an alleyway into space for public art, rejuvenating a forgotten corner of a park, or finding new uses for underutilized parking spaces; the possibilities are endless.

As part of your competition entry, you must gather feedback from the community who will use the space. This feedback is core to designing something that is not only beautiful but also functional for those who interact with it everyday.

Engage is a new tool created for designers, like you, to simplify the process of gathering feedback. You’ll use it to harness the wealth of knowledge within your community and gather important insights.

Join this competition and explore how community engagement can shape spaces that inspire, connect, and enrich lives.

How to Participate
STAGE 1
  1. Find an underutilized public place in your town with the potential to enhance social wellbeing within the community.

Examples: alleyway, secluded corner of a public square, unmaintained pedestrian tunnel or bridge, small vacant lots, parking lots or spaces, etc.
  2. Think of ways in which you can enrich the space and turn it into a community asset.
  3. Identify the people most likely to be impacted by your design. Create an engagement using Engage to gather their feedback on what they would like to see on the space. You can use a snapshot from Google Maps or photos of the space to gather feedback. You must use a Sticky Notes question in this engagement.

    Here are some example questions.
    - What would you like to see happen with this space?
    - What are the biggest challenges that have to be addressed?
  1. Share your engagement and gather insights that will help inform your design. We suggest running your engagement for at least a week and gathering at least 10-15 responses.

  2. Create another engagement, using Engage, to gather feedback on your proposal. You must use a Sticky Notes question in this engagement.
